Sustainability rating and certification systems such as Green Star provide a way to communicate sustainability ambition and quality assurance rigour for the delivery of sustainability measures.
HIP V. HYPE was engaged by La Trobe University to identify key design and cost implications of certifying a range of different building typologies using Green Star tools. The analysis considered both Green Star Buildings and Green Star Homes.

Context
Key differences resulting from the application of Green Star criteria compared to a business-as-usual design (i.e. planning/building code compliance) were identified and then an evaluation of cost impact was then undertaken to determine if the cost implication would be significant.
The investigation provided La Trobe University with a better understanding of the cost implications of delivering Green Star projects to inform future decision-making.
- Comparison of Green Star criteria against planning and building code requirements
- Evaluation of impact
- Estimation of cost implications
- Identification of the major cost differences resulting from delivering buildings to Green Star standards
