In August 2019, Mornington Peninsula Shire (MPS) declared a climate emergency. This required Council to take urgent action to address the emergency and ensure that Council and the community are equipped to take appropriate action to mitigate and adapt to the climate emergency.

HIP V. HYPE Sustainability has been engaged by MPS to undertake all stakeholder engagement to receive input into the development of Council's Climate Emergency Plan, and provide advice on the content of the Plan.

Context

HIP V. HYPE Sustainability was engaged by MPS to undertake all the engagement to receive input into the development of the climate emergency plan and provide advice on the content of the Climate Emergency Plan.

With a six month timeframe to deliver a Climate Emergency Plan, immediate and effective stakeholder engagement was required to ensure the Plan could be robust and cover the needs of all stakeholders.

The Climate Emergency Plan is set to be an action plan for Council and the community, guiding the action that needs to be taken to address the climate emergency:

  • Community engagement: undertook 3 stages of engagement to target the broadest range of the community including drop-in sessions, a survey and targeted workshops
  • Internal engagement: facilitated a workshop with MPS staff to develop and refine actions for the Plan
  • Plan writing support: working closely with MPS to develop and populate the Climate Emergency Plan

The Climate Emergency Plan is set to be completed in early 2020. The Plan will guide investment by Council and partnerships with community to ensure the Shire can mitigate the effects and adapt to the impacts of the climate emergency.
