Australians are increasingly living in apartment and strata-titled buildings, but environmental improvements are challenging due to individual restrictions and governance issues inherent to owners corporations. The Unlocking Sustainable Strata project seeks to demystify the process for retrofitting sustainably in various apartment types, including high-rise.

Through cross-disciplinary collaboration between project partners HIP V. HYPE, Sustainable Strata Australia, The Knight, Yarra City Council and Merri-bek Council, a series of targeted guides were developed to fill the gap in resources for apartment and townhouse residents.

Sustainability

A dedicated website provides steps for upgrading buildings, state rebates and other considerations. Simple guides are available for townhomes and low-, mid-, and high-rise apartments, explaining how owners and tenants can work together on upgrades such as centralised heat pumps, gardens and LED lighting.

  • Background review of relevant opportunities and challenges with delivering environmental improvement in builds
  • Creation of guides to assist with decision making and action for different types of strata titled buildings
  • Partnership development between industry, local government and representative bodies
  • Creation of a series of guides and communications to assist residents to deliver action in their buildings
